Brussels – The French government is urging the EU to pause the enforcement of the directive on corporate duty of care, which mandates companies to tackle human and social rights violations, such as child and forced labor, as well as environmental issues like deforestation and pollution.
Benjamin Haddad, the deputy minister responsible for European affairs, emphasized on X that “our businesses require simplification, not additional administrative burdens.”
The directive, which was adopted last April, stipulates that the duty of care should extend throughout the global value chains of companies, including their suppliers, subcontractors, and subsidiaries.
Additionally, Mr. Haddad is calling for a review of another environmental directive, known as the CSRD, which has faced criticism from many European business leaders. They are keen to enhance their competitiveness against China, especially with the potential return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency.
The CSRD focuses on green accounting, aiming to standardize how companies in Europe report their sustainability data, covering environmental, social, and governance aspects. (January 24, 2025)
