Trump has suggested the possibility of providing Tomahawks to Ukraine if Putin continues to reject his attempts to end the war. However, his post on TruthSocial did not mention the missiles or any further measures against Russia. Instead, it expressed a positive tone toward Putin, noting the president’s acknowledgement of a preliminary Gaza ceasefire and thanks to First Lady Melania Trump for her involvement with children.
Ian Garner, a Russia expert at the Pilecki Institute in Warsaw, warned that Trump’s recent outreach to Putin might be as unproductive as the August 15 summit in Alaska. During that meeting, Trump welcomed Putin, breaking his international isolation, but left without any significant concessions from Moscow.
“We’re in a similar situation as in the summer, with Trump’s interest in peace seeming to be driven by a desire for spectacle,” Garner said. “There’s no sign that Trump has reflected on the shortcomings of the Alaska meeting, which didn’t appear to alter Russia’s behavior.
Additionally, there’s no indication that Trump is considering the role of European allies in any talks or peace negotiations, making it unlikely to become the successful peace deal he envisions.”
