A 40-year-old German from Rhineland-Palatinate was behind the wheel in a serious incident in Mannheim, according to Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl. The driver, who was also injured, is now receiving medical treatment in a hospital, Strobl told the dpa news agency.
Following the crash, the driver attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended and arrested after a brief police search. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the act was intentional.
Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has altered her schedule, canceling her planned visit to Cologne’s Rose Monday parade to travel to Mannheim instead.
“Right now, saving lives, treating the injured, and supporting the ongoing investigation are our top priorities,” Faeser’s spokesperson stated.
Currently, three individuals are receiving emergency medical care at the University Hospital in Mannheim, the hospital confirmed.
This incident follows a similar event in Munich, where an Afghan asylum seeker drove into a trade union rally in February, injuring 15 people.
