Norway cannot reject all EU directives within the EU energy package without undermining the credibility of the EEA agreement, particularly at this critical juncture. This was asserted by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of the Labor Party during a press conference on Thursday afternoon.
The press briefing followed the exit of the Center Party from the government, prompted by dissatisfaction with the Labor Party’s stance on EU issues.
According to Norway’s public broadcaster NRK, the contention revolves around the Labor Party’s intentions to adopt three directives from the EU energy package, a move the Center Party opposes due to concerns that it could lead to comprehensive implementation of the entire package.
“The Labor Party advocates for closer integration with the EU’s energy market. My conclusion is that the Center Party does not share this view,” stated Center Party leader Trygve Slagsvold Vedum during an earlier press conference, as reported by media outlets.
In his address, Prime Minister Støre clarified that Norway’s participation in the directives is not a matter of “electricity prices or relinquishing authority to anyone, including the EU.” He emphasized that the goal is to safeguard Norway from potential trade conflicts and tariff disputes between Europe and the USA.
Despite the recent developments, the Center Party noted that they still consider it “natural” for Støre to continue as Prime Minister.
NRK reports that it may take several days, or even up to a week, for a new government to be established.
