Former Tory MP Jenkyns Criticizes Conservative Party and Joins Greater Lincolnshire Leadership Race
Jenkyns, the former Conservative MP who lost her seat in July, has spoken out against her party, accusing it of having “lost its way.” In a candid statement, she emphasized the emotional difficulty of parting from a political organization she had supported for decades.
“I have long believed in conservatism and the principles it should represent,” Jenkyns stated. “I remained loyal to the very end during the general election, going down with the proverbial ship. But the reality is clear: the ship is sinking, and perhaps, sadly, it is beyond saving. Enough is enough.”
Jenkyns has now announced her candidacy to lead the newly-formed Greater Lincolnshire Combined Authority. This regional governing body is set to wield substantial funding powers under the Labour government currently in control at Westminster.
The Conservative Party suffered a monumental defeat in the July general election, hitting a historic low in terms of parliamentary representation. In contrast, the Reform Party has gained momentum, securing five parliamentary seats, including one for its leader Nigel Farage, who has now shifted his focus toward challenging Labour’s dominance.
Reflecting on her political journey, Jenkyns remarked on Thursday: “I was elected as a Conservative, and I lost as a Conservative, but it has become apparent to me that the party is exhausted and no longer what it once was.”
Jenkyns’ decision to step away from the Conservative Party and seek a new leadership role marks a significant moment in the shifting dynamics of British politics.
