During a leaders’ summit in Kyiv marking three years since the onset of the Russian invasion, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the significant human toll of the conflict. “We must not forget the immense suffering and destruction that has occurred, disrupting countless lives. It is crucial for us all to strive for an end to this conflict. Your sacrifices, dear Volodymyr, and those of your people, must not be in vain. Your resilience and courage have been truly outstanding,” he stated.
Mitsotakis asserted that Ukraine deserves a peace built on strength—one that honors its independence and ensures its security. “Importantly, the decision of whether to accept or reject any peace proposal lies solely with Ukraine. No other party can make this choice for Kyiv; it is essential to include Kyiv in the decision-making process regarding its future,” he emphasized.
The Prime Minister called for a peace agreement that includes clear security guarantees, which would serve as deterrents against future aggression and help maintain lasting peace. He highlighted Greece’s commitment to defense spending, noting that the country allocates over 3% of its GDP to this sector, and urged others to do the same. “After three years of unprecedented destruction, we must rally around this goal and act decisively. We need to end this conflict and establish a framework to prevent similar disasters in the future,” he stated.
Mitsotakis concluded by acknowledging that the path ahead will be challenging. “However, we have a clear vision for the future: a peaceful, secure, democratic, and independent Ukraine—dear Volodymyr, a European Ukraine that can face the future with hope and confidence,” he added.
