Moscow has issued a warning of retaliation after claiming to have intercepted and destroyed eight U.S.-made missiles fired from Ukraine toward Russia’s southwestern Belgorod region.
“These PLACEHOLDER5c3756419cc4c94b, supported by their Western backers, will not go unanswered and will face retaliation,” the Russian defense ministry declared in a PLACEHOLDER952a405674d8a0de on Telegram on Saturday. However, the statement did not elaborate on what specific countermeasures Russia intends to implement. Ukraine has yet to comment on the alleged missile strike.
The Kremlin has labeled Ukraine’s use of long-range ATACMS missiles, supplied by the United States and capable of striking targets up to 300 kilometers away, as a major provocation and an escalation of the ongoing war. These missiles enable Ukraine to strike far into Russian territory, a move seen by Moscow as a significant intensification of the conflict.
