Moldova Confirms Its European Path in Sunday’s Parliamentary Elections

The electorate of the Republic of Moldova largely favors a pro-European stance in the parliamentary elections.

Chisinau/Bucharest – The Action and Solidarity Party (PAS, pro-European) in the Republic of Moldova has decisively won the parliamentary elections held on Sunday, securing a majority in Parliament with 55 seats, according to preliminary official results.

The new legislative body in Chisinau will also feature four additional parties that have met the legal threshold: the Patriotic Electoral Bloc (BEP), the “Alternative” Electoral Bloc (BEA), Our Party (PN), and the Democracy at Home Party (PPDA).

The President of Romania, Nicuşor Dan, congratulated the Moldovan citizens for their “firm” vote in support of the country’s European trajectory and confirmed that Romania will continue to assist Moldova in its European aspirations, focusing on projects that enhance prosperity and improve living standards for its citizens.

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan extended his congratulations to the Moldovan electorate for their active participation in the parliamentary elections and their choice in favor of a European direction, emphasizing that the Republic of Moldova belongs “in the great European family.”

“On a personal level and on behalf of the Romanian Government, we will support the Republic of Moldova on this journey,” the Prime Minister assured.

Romanian MEP Victor Negrescu, Vice President of the European Parliament, remarked that the success of pro-European parties in the Republic of Moldova sends a strong signal regarding EU accession, urging the Council to swiftly approve the initiation of negotiations on relevant chapters.

”Moldovan citizens have conveyed a clear message: they aspire for a European future. The results reflect that, despite challenges and manipulation attempts aimed at undermining the electoral process, pro-European parties have triumphed. This victory embodies the values of democracy, rule of law, transparency, and European solidarity,” stated Negrescu.

He noted that the Republic of Moldova and particularly President Maia Sandu have provided a lesson in democracy and resilience to the Western world.

“As the Vice President of the European Parliament responsible for relations with the Republic of Moldova, I assure you of the full backing of the European legislature. Europe and Romania gain, and the Republic of Moldova is progressing towards a shared future with the European Union. By the conclusion of 2028, the EU accession negotiations could be completed,” Negrescu affirmed.

The Republic of Moldova holds candidate country status for EU accession.

Recent official statistics indicate that more than 850,000 of the 2.4 million residents of the Republic of Moldova have obtained Romanian citizenship between 1991 and 2024. (29.9.2025)
