MFA: Sofia Attempts to Shift Blame for Unmet International Obligations onto Skopje

Skopje – The Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed regret over our neighbor’s attempt to transfer blame for their failure to meet international obligations onto North Macedonia. This statement responds to the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ reaction to Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski’s remarks.

The Ministry underscores that adherence to the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is not a bilateral matter but a fundamental obligation for all member states of the Council of Europe. The Republic of North Macedonia remains steadfast in its commitment to the rule of law, human rights, and freedoms, which are essential to European integration. The Ministry cannot accept any denial or minimization of these principles, particularly regarding the rights of the Macedonian minority in Bulgaria.

Furthermore, the Ministry emphasizes that North Macedonia is dedicated to the European integration process and believes that this should not be hindered by the imposition of additional political conditions outside of the Copenhagen criteria.

The Ministry assesses that the practice of imposing conditions and making baseless accusations poses an unprincipled barrier to our Euro-integration efforts and does not advance good neighborly relations. Instead, it fosters unnecessary tensions that are contrary to the European spirit of cooperation.

The Macedonian authorities are deeply committed to fostering amicable relations with Bulgaria and addressing all outstanding issues through equal dialogue, responsible conduct, mutual respect, and understanding.

In this context, the Ministry anticipates a similarly constructive response from the Republic of Bulgaria, rooted in respect for the objectives and principles of the UN Charter and international law. This approach is vital for the welfare of our citizens, the interests of both nations, and the enhancement of regional peace, stability, security, and a shared European future, as stated in the announcement from the Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
