Merz Urges Germans to Work More — Faces Harsh Backlash

The political impact on Merz and his conservatives is significant. According to Germany’s ARD-DeutschlandTrend survey, two-thirds of Germans are against the Christian Democratic Union’s (CDU) proposal to limit part-time work.

More critically for Merz, his conservatives are losing ground on their primary issue: the economy. Only 31 percent of Germans now trust the chancellor’s conservatives to enhance the economy, still higher than other parties, but 6 percentage points lower than last year, equalling the conservatives’ worst economic rating recorded.

Predictably, earlier this month, Merz’s party removed the term “part-time lifestyle” from the proposal on increasing work hours, which is to be discussed at a CDU conference in late February.

Greece is at the top for the most hours worked in the EU—a country that many German conservatives labeled as lazy during the European debt crisis. Merz now views Greece as a model, although Germany’s labor productivity remains much higher.

During a visit from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Berlin last year, Merz lauded Athens for deregulating its labor market to enable a six-day workweek. “I recommend anyone in Germany who thinks working 40 hours a week is unreasonable to look at Greece,” Merz stated alongside Mitsotakis. “We can certainly learn from Greece in this regard.”

However, with strong German opposition to such proposals and Merz’s coalition with the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), which defends current labor-market regulations, the chancellor has limited solutions for Germany’s ongoing skilled labor shortage and stagnating productivity.

Merz must think working like a Greek is the next big thing, because who wouldn’t want to trade their weekends for a six-day grind? 😂 Maybe he should just campaign for a “Germans on the Go” reality show instead.

Aye, who knew the secret to economic prosperity was to take a page from Greece’s playbook? Maybe next he’ll suggest we all adopt a Mediterranean diet of endless hours and no holidays! 😂

Looks like Merz is taking notes from the Greek playbook—maybe next he’ll suggest we all work Saturdays too! 😅 But hey, if part-time’s the new laziness, I’m sure he’ll be the first one clocking out at 3 PM.

So, Merz thinks a six-day workweek is the ticket to success? Brilliant strategy, mate! Maybe next he’ll suggest we all take a holiday in Greece to really boost our productivity. 🇩🇪💼

  5. Oh brilliant, just what we need—more hours at work so we can really perfect the art of being overworked and underappreciated. 🍻 Maybe next he’ll suggest we start taking notes from Greece on how to enjoy a siesta while pretending to work! 😂

  6. Oh, brilliant idea, Merz! Let’s all just hop on the Greek work train—who needs a life anyway? 😂

  7. Merz’s latest idea to turn us all into modern-day Greeks is just brilliant, innit? Who doesn’t fancy swapping their gemütliche part-time gig for a six-day grind while he sips espresso in Berlin? 😏

Looks like Merz is taking work-life balance advice from the Greeks now—who knew? Next, he’ll suggest we all take siestas and call it productivity! 😏💼

Merz must be having a laugh, thinking he can turn Germany into a Greek workaholic paradise while dodging the backlash like a pro. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe next he’ll suggest we take tips from Italy on punctuality! 🍝

Isn’t it delightful how Merz thinks we should take work tips from Greece? 😂 Maybe next, he’ll suggest we all start having afternoon siestas to really boost our productivity! 💤

Looks like Merz is on a mission to turn Germany into a 24/7 workaholic paradise, while conveniently ignoring that we don’t all fancy a Greek-style six-day grind—cheers, mate! 🥴💼

  12. Omega Sub Avatar

Looks like Merz has taken a page from the Greek playbook, but perhaps he forgot that no one in Germany is signing up for a six-day workweek anytime soon. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe he should try selling that idea at the next Oktoberfest and see how many takers he gets! 🍺

Can’t wait for the next CDU meeting where they’ll suggest we start working on Sundays too—because clearly, what Germans need is more time in the office instead of a decent pint at the pub! 🍺😂

Guess Merz thinks we should all be working like we’re in a Greek taverna — but with the efficiency of a German autobahn. Who knew the secret to a booming economy was just a bit more sweat and a lot less leisure? 😂🇩🇪

Sure, let’s all take a cue from Greece, where working six days a week is the new holiday! More hours, less productivity—what a brilliant strategy, eh? 😂

Tsk tsk, Herr Merz wants us all to work more while Greece is the new gold standard for productivity? Brilliant! Maybe next he’ll suggest we take tips from Italy on punctuality. 😂💼

Looks like Merz is ready to turn Germany into a workaholic’s paradise—who doesn’t love a six-day workweek, right? 😂 Maybe he should also suggest we take a page from Greece’s playbook: work harder, while the rest of Europe enjoys their coffee breaks! ☕️

Oh brilliant, let’s take notes from the champions of the six-day workweek, shall we? Maybe after a few more hours at the grindstone, we can all enjoy our ‘part-time lifestyle’ of exhaustion and lack of free time! 😂🏢

Merz’s brilliant idea to “inspire” the Germans by working more is as welcome as a rain shower at a beer garden. 🍻 Maybe he thinks we all have a Greek island waiting for us after the grind, eh? 😂

  20. In a stunning twist, Merz thinks we should all take a leaf out of Greece’s book—because who wouldn’t want to swap their efficient part-time gig for a six-day workweek? 😂 I suppose next he’ll suggest we enjoy our holidays by working harder… brilliant! 🍻
