Paris – President Emmanuel Macron stated on Saturday, ahead of the 61st agricultural fair in Paris, that France is actively pursuing a “blocking minority” within the European Union regarding the free trade agreement with the South American Mercosur countries.
France opposes this agreement, arguing that the Mercosur bloc must adhere to EU standards to prevent unfair competition.
This trade deal, aimed at liberalizing commerce with five Latin American nations, was signed on December 6, 2024, but still requires ratification to take effect.
He reiterated his commitment to seeking a “blocking minority” within the EU.
In order for this free trade agreement to be ratified, it must secure the backing of at least 15 member states representing 65% of the EU population, and also gain a majority in the European Parliament. (February 22, 2025)
