Meloni Privately Advised EU Leaders Against Opposing Trump

Following the summit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that leaders realized the effectiveness of opposing Trump in a “firm” yet “non-escalatory” manner.

EU leaders organized the emergency summit in reaction to Trump’s threat of tariffs on eight European countries due to their opposition to his bid to acquire Greenland from Denmark. The crisis in the transatlantic alliance has been a focal point in discussions across Brussels and other European capitals. Leaders convened on Thursday for dinner to draft a future strategy.

After the EU threatened to counteract with trade measures if Trump proceeded with his tariff threat, and with negative market reactions, the U.S. president withdrew and signaled interest in a peaceful agreement regarding Greenland.

Reports highlighted Meloni’s preference for a more cautious approach compared to some other leaders. On Friday, Meloni hosted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Rome to discuss enhanced defense and industrial cooperation.

EU leaders decided to reconvene next month for a “strategic brainstorming” session to adapt to a new global order marked by major power rivalries and a reduced role for international law.

A fifth person familiar with the discussions remarked that most leaders considered recent events as a turning point, emphasizing Europe must act swiftly on several fronts to protect its core interests. They harbor “no illusions that the crisis is over.”

Hannah Roberts in Rome contributed to this report.

  1. Oh, splendid! A cozy dinner in Brussels to strategize against a man who throws tantrums like a child denied dessert. 🍰 Who knew diplomacy involved so much fine dining and whispering sweet nothings to a reality TV star? 🤷‍♂️

  2. Oh sure, because nothing says “strategic genius” like a dinner party to chat about tariffs over pasta. 🍝 Who needs a proper plan when you’ve got a menu, right?

Oh, brilliant! Who knew that a dinner in Brussels could solve all our problems with a side of tariffs? 🍽️ Next stop, a Michelin star for “Strategic Diplomacy à la carte!” 😂

Funny how Meloni’s playing diplomat while the rest of the gang is trying out their best “firm but friendly” faces. I guess when it comes to global politics, a bit of cozy chat over pasta beats a trade war any day, eh? 🇮🇹🍝

Seems like Meloni’s got a knack for playing diplomat—who knew advising against a Trump showdown would be the secret to keeping the peace? 🍷 Maybe next time we should all just have a nice dinner instead of throwing tariffs around, eh? 😏

Oh, lovely, looks like Meloni’s now the EU’s go-to guru for handling Trumplandia. Bravo, let’s all just sip our espresso while we tiptoe around the big orange elephant in the room! 🍵🦙

Looks like Meloni’s advice to play nice with Trump is just what we need—because nothing says “strong leadership” like a cozy dinner with a man who wants to trade Europe for a chunk of ice. 🍦✨

Seems like Meloni’s strategy is to play nice while the rest of the EU is ready to throw down over Greenland. Classic European diplomacy: all the drama of a soap opera, but with better pastries. 🍰😏

Talk about a masterclass in diplomatic gymnastics! Who knew advising against ruffling Trump’s feathers would become the latest trend in EU strategy? 🤦‍♂️🍷
