The Metropolitan Police are currently investigating a disturbing series of letters received by Members of Parliament in recent months, according to an email sent to MPs’ offices and obtained by POLITICO.
The email stated that the offensive letters are believed to have been sent by a single individual. What makes the correspondence particularly alarming is that, in addition to containing abusive language, some of the letters appear to be smeared with excrement.
Police have urged any MPs who receive such letters to report them immediately. The House of Commons has declined to comment while investigations are ongoing.
One MP, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the issue, told POLITICO they had recently received a letter marked with blood. It remains unclear whether this incident is linked to the current police inquiry.
The investigation comes amid a broader rise in threats and abuse targeted at parliamentarians. In response, Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle has launched a review into MP safety.
In recent years, several individuals have been prosecuted for threatening MPs, often through email or social media. As a result, many MPs have spoken publicly about the impact on their lives and the growing security precautions they’ve been forced to adopt — including ending face-to-face constituency surgeries, installing panic rooms, and carrying personal alarm devices.
