Major Brussels Arts Venue Unveils New Season

One of Brussels’ best loved concert venues has unveiled its new programme for the coming arts season.

In 2026-2027, Flagey makes the First Viennese School the main thread of a season driven by what it calls “a clear philosophy”: listening to the music of the past can help us better understand the present.

With the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death approaching, artists such as Boris Giltburg, Quatuor Ébène, Mitsuko Uchida, Paul Lewis, András Schiff, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Dmytro Choni and Alexander Melnikov “show how relevant and powerful this music still is.”

The season also prominently features jazz.

Louise van den Heuvel, artist in residence of Brussels Jazz Festival, Anouar Brahem and Dee Dee Bridgewater will take the stage, alongside the 50th anniversary of Les Lundis d’Hortense.

The Flagey Piano Days, meantime, bring together some of today’s greatest pianists and pay tribute to Philip Glass.

J.S. Bach is a recurring name throughout the season, interpreted by Philippe Herreweghe.

Album releases, young laureates and a family-centred programme further  seek to celebrate creation, transmission and the joy of new discoveries.

The First Viennese school: mirror of our time

Will a world marked by uncertainty, fear and hope inspire a new musical language?

This is the question Flagey also explores throughout its 2026-2027 season, through a series of concerts devoted to the First Viennese School and, above all, Ludwig van Beethoven.

Some 200 years after his death, Beethoven is not presented as an untouchable icon, but as a composer whose music still speaks powerfully to our time.

A Flagey spokesman said, “Alongside Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert, he allows people to reflect on how music can respond to a world in turmoil. It offers resilience, consolation and the energy to move forward.”

Artist in residence Boris Giltburg presents the entirety of Beethoven’s sonatas for piano, a project unfolding over two seasons.

He not only performs solo (25.03.27, 8.15pm and 06.06.27, 5pm), but also appears in a format new to Brussels: sonatas in the first half of the concert, followed by a symphonic programme with the Brussels Philharmonic in the second half (26-27.03.27, 8.15pm and 04-05.06.27, 8.15pm).

Another artist in residence, Paul Lewis, launches a long-term project at Flagey dedicated to Mozart’s sonatas, which he will record in the building itself.

Mitsuko Uchida makes her Flagey debut with a programme linking the First and Second Viennese Schools, featuring works by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Schönberg (27.11.26, 8.15pm).

In March, András Schiff devotes an entire concert to Haydn (17.03.27, 8pm).

Meanwhile in April, Frank Peter Zimmermann makes his Flagey debut alongside Dmytro Choni for a one-off Belgian performance that brings together Schubert and the Second Viennese School (13.04.27, 8.15pm).

Jazz, a space for diversity

The Brussels Jazz Festival runs from 14 to 23 January 2027, with Louise van den Heuvel as artist in residence.

The Dutch bassist presents three projects: a concert with Kit Downes, Otis Sandsjö and Sun-Mi Hong (15.01.27, 9pm), an experience combining brunch and listening with Bert Cools (17.01.27, 2pm), and a new repertoire with her band Sonic Hug (21.01.27, 7.30pm).

The festival also highlights The Best of Belgian Jazz, Flagey’s series dedicated

Imagine that, in a world of chaos, we turn to Beethoven for answers. Next, they’ll be asking the ghosts of composers for investment tips! 🎹😏

Oh joy, another season of dead composers! 🎶 Who knew Beethoven could still offer us “resilience” after 200 years? I guess we can all just let the classics drown out our modern woes—cheers to that! 🍷

The Flagey venue’s new season sounds absolutely riveting—because who wouldn’t want to spend their evenings contemplating the existential crises of Beethoven while jazz-fusing brunch? 🎹🥂 Looks like Brussels is really raising the stakes on cultured procrastination! 😂

Looks like Flagey’s new season is just what we need—more reminders of the past while we’re busy wondering if we’ll make it through the week! 🎹 If only Beethoven had a podcast for the modern woes, eh? 😂

  5. So, apparently, listening to centuries-old music is the key to tackling today’s chaos—who knew we just needed a Beethoven playlist, right? 🎶 Let’s just hope the jazz artists don’t start quoting Aristotle while they’re at it! 😏

Can’t wait to hear Beethoven’s sonatas while contemplating the chaos of our times—nothing says “let’s fix the world” quite like a bit of classical music, right? 🎹😂

Looks like Flagey’s decided that revisiting the past is the new avant-garde—who knew Beethoven could be this trendy? 🎹🎶 But hey, if it helps us cope with modern madness, I suppose it’s worth a shot! 😏

So, Flagey is digging up Beethoven like he’s some ancient relic to remind us how to cope with modern chaos—cheers to that! 🎹✨ Can’t wait to see how many hipsters show up for the ‘realness’ of it all. 😂

Coz, who wouldn’t want to spend their evenings listening to 200-year-old music while contemplating the world’s chaos? 🎶 It’s like Netflix, but with more powdered wigs and fewer explosions. 😏

Gosh, who knew listening to dead composers could be such a thrilling way to face our modern chaos? 🎹 At this rate, I might just start charging for my own existential dread concerts! 😏

Looks like Flagey is pulling out all the stops to remind us that music from centuries ago can still be a banger—who knew Beethoven could make a comeback like a 90s boy band? 🎹💃

Isn’t it adorable how they think that simply cranking out Beethoven and some jazz will solve all our modern woes? 🎹🎷 Cheers to nostalgia and a good dose of ‘musty old classics’ for the soul!

Seems like Flagey’s got more nostalgia than a grandma’s attic! 🎹 Nothing says “let’s reflect on our chaotic world” quite like a couple of centuries-old compositions, eh? 😏

So, let me get this straight: while the world outside is a circus, we’re diving into the 18th century for our musical enlightenment? Brilliant! 🎻 Because nothing screams “relevant” like 200-year-old compositions in a city where the weather alone is enough to inspire a symphony of its own. 😂

So, let me get this straight: we’re digging out Beethoven to solve today’s problems? Next, we’ll consult Mozart for our tax returns, eh? 🎹😂

Looks like Flagey is trying to make Beethoven the new influencer on social media—because nothing screams “relevant” like dusty old sonatas while the world’s going bonkers. 🎹🤪

Looks like Flagey has really dug deep into the ol’ classical vaults—because nothing screams “fresh and exciting” like a 200-year-old dude’s music. 🎻 But hey, if you can’t find inspiration in the echoes of a bygone era, are you even trying? 😂

Oh great, more Beethoven and a sprinkle of jazz – just what we need to drown out the sound of our daily chaos. 🎹🍷 Who knew the key to understanding our turbulent times was hidden in a dusty old concert hall?

The Church’s Authority

The Church’s Authority

By Fr. Alexander Men
When discussing the authority left by the Lord to the Church, we must dismiss any notion of it resembling earthly authority. Forget that church authorities in the Middle Ages and other times sometimes resembled state power. This authority is fundamentally different and cannot be compared.
