French President Emmanuel Macron is working to secure a compromise with opposition forces in the nation’s divided legislature as he seeks to ensure the next head of government outlasts the tenure of Michel Barnier.
The top contenders being discussed in French media both hail from Macron’s political circle: former Industry Minister Roland Lescure and centrist heavyweight François Bayrou.
However, questions remain about how a new prime minister aligned with Macron, given his allies’ lack of a parliamentary majority, could garner the necessary support to maintain their position.
