Macron connected the attack to the Middle Eastern conflict but refrained from attributing responsibility for the killing. He stated he would remain “prudent,” await discussions with the Iraqi prime minister, and gather more information from France’s armed forces.
The incident occurs as the pro-Iranian group Ashab Al-Kahf declared on Friday its intent to target “all French interests in Iraq and the region,” as reported by French media.
Amid rising regional tensions, Macron stated that France would stay “calm, composed and determined,” continuing to “be reliable with our allies, protect our citizens and defend our interests and security.”
The attack was deemed “unacceptable” by the French president, who emphasized that the soldiers were in Iraq to combat the Islamic State group.
Last week, Macron announced that the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle was being deployed to the Mediterranean, accompanied by fighter jets and air defense systems, to safeguard French interests in the Middle East.
