PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron praised Prime Minister François Bayrou’s bold budget proposal for the coming year as a brave move to stabilize the nation’s finances.
During the weekly Cabinet meeting, government spokesperson Sophie Primas informed reporters that Macron commended Bayrou and other ministers for the plans introduced on Tuesday — which involve removing two public holidays, cutting thousands of public service jobs, and reducing healthcare spending by €5 billion — highlighting their “courage, audacity and lucidity.”
Primas noted Macron’s approval of the budget plan’s focus on economic growth, possibly alluding to the absence of tax increases in the proposal. However, the prime minister did mention that the government would request a one-time “solidarity contribution” from high-income individuals.
