Londerzeel (Eurotoday) – The municipality of Londerzeel is cracking down on illegal waste dumping with strict penalties that include fines of up to €500, cleanup costs ranging from €750 to €2,000, and the deployment of hidden surveillance cameras. Mayor Nadia Sminate is strongly backing the initiative, with six individuals already caught in recent weeks.
Authorities report that a recent case of illegal dumping near the town’s recycling centre in Londerzeel, located in the Flemish Brabant province of Belgium, resulted in more than just a monetary penalty. The offender is required to pay a €500 fine in addition to covering the cost of cleaning the site, estimated between €750 and €2,000.
Local officials emphasize that illegal dumping is both costly and unacceptable. The goal is to deter residents and visitors from violating waste disposal regulations by highlighting the financial consequences of such actions.
How is Londerzeel combating illegal trash dumping with cameras and fines?
To strengthen its enforcement capabilities, the town of Londerzeel is investing in a new generation of surveillance cameras. These devices are smaller and more discreet than their predecessors, making them easier to place in strategic locations where illegal dumping frequently occurs.
Mayor Nadia Sminate is determined to preserve the town’s cleanliness and ensure that violators face consequences. She sees these efforts as essential to maintaining a safe and pleasant environment for all residents.
This approach aligns with broader efforts in many Flemish municipalities, where the cost of illegal dumping is rising as authorities prioritize cleanliness and public safety.
In recent months, incidents of illegal dumping have increased in Londerzeel. Six individuals have been caught in the past three months alone. One notable case occurred in late February, when furniture and toys were dumped just a few kilometres from the recycling centre.
Local police, waste management services, and the neighbourhood watch collaborated to identify the culprit. Using surveillance footage and clues found in the trash, they were able to track down the offender, who received a €500 fine for the violation.

Fines of up to €500 for dumping? Clearly, Londerzeel is the new waste police headquarters! Next, they’ll be issuing parking tickets for leaving your leftovers on the street! 😂🍕

Looks like Londerzeel has found a new way to fund their coffee breaks—€500 fines and hidden cameras! Because nothing says “welcome to our charming town” like a hefty ticket for tossing a banana peel, am I right? 🍌💸

Oh brilliant, nothing says “I care about the environment” quite like slapping a €500 fine on someone for dumping their old sofa. I can almost hear the trees thanking Mayor Sminate while whispering, “Cheers, love, that’s just what we needed!” 😂🌳

So, Londerzeel’s got hidden cameras now? Brilliant! Because nothing says “we care about cleanliness” like turning your town into a budget version of Big Brother. 😂💰

Looks like Londerzeel is really raising the stakes for those who thought illegal dumping was a hobby! €500 fines and hidden cameras? Next, they’ll be sending the bill for the cleanup to your mum. 😂

Only in Londerzeel do you get fined more for tossing your trash than for a night out in Brussels! 😄 Hope those hidden cameras come with a pop-up reminder to *just* use the bin, not the countryside! 🗑️💸

Oh great, nothing says “we care about the environment” quite like slapping a €500 fine on your neighbor for tossing a pizza box in the wrong bin. 😏 Next, maybe they’ll install a camera in my living room to catch me binge-watching instead of recycling—now that’s what I call public service! 🍕📸
