Brussels – After some delays, Sweden is now set to receive its initial tranche of the EU’s substantial support following the coronavirus pandemic.
The European Commission has approved a first payment of 1.6 billion euros to Sweden, as announced in a press release on Tuesday.
This payment was significantly postponed, partly due to the change of government in Sweden in the autumn of 2022 and subsequent adjustments to Swedish plans. The funds will be allocated to initiatives such as climate enhancement and the expansion of broadband services.
The Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), established during the pandemic, aims to assist EU nations in reviving their economies. It comprises 312.5 billion euros in grants and 360 billion euros in loans, financed through collective borrowing by the EU.
Sweden is the last EU member state to receive funds from this facility. Similar to other countries, Sweden opted to request only grant funding, amounting to a total of 3.5 billion euros.
Italy has received the largest share of RRF funding to date: 75.7 billion euros in loans and 46.5 billion euros in grants.
