KU Leuven Activist Fined €900 for Graffiti; 1 Guilty, 4 Acquitted

Leuven (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – An activist at KU Leuven was fined €900 for graffiti during pro-Palestinian protests. One defendant was found guilty, ordered to pay damages and a suspended fine, while 4 others were acquitted.

As VRT News reported, an activist who painted graffiti on KU Leuven buildings in May 2024 must pay €900 to the university and the city. Surveillance camera footage helped identify 5 suspects linked to the vandalism. They mentioned that the €900 fine covers damage to university buildings and the disruption caused during the protest.

How did the KU Leuven graffiti protests result in 1 guilty and 4 acquitted?

5 people accused of vandalising KU Leuven buildings appeared in court in early September 2025. The Public Prosecution Service asked for community service for the defendants. KU Leuven requested nearly €2,500 in damages for the university buildings. The city of Leuven requested about €1,300 to cover the cost of removing the graffiti.

The court has delivered its verdict. 1 defendant was found guilty. She must pay €577.72 in damages to KU Leuven and €322 to the city. She also received a suspended fine of €208. The other 4 defendants were acquitted because of insufficient evidence. The court said there was a reasonable doubt about their involvement.

“They cannot be identified with certainty as perpetrators in the camera footage,”

the judge ruled.

In May 2024, pro-Palestinian activists began protests at KU Leuven, including occupying the De Valk building from May 13, 2024. They demanded that the university end all partnerships with Israeli institutions. The occupation lasted until September 2024, ending after a court order forced them to leave. During this period, activists painted graffiti on at least 10 university buildings with messages such as “Genocide Free Gaza” and “Complicit in genocide.”

A grand total of €900 for a spot of creative expression? Seems like those walls were just craving a bit of modern art! 🎨💸

Just €900 for a bit of artistic expression? Sounds like a bargain for turning campus walls into a canvas. 🎨🤷‍♂️

€900 for a bit of graffiti? What a steal! At least she’s not paying for a degree in art history—though, judging by the quality, maybe she should’ve! 😂

  4. Only €900 for a bit of creative expression? Sounds like a bargain compared to the price of a pint in Leuven! 🍻 If only the judges were that lenient when it comes to parking fines. 😂

Looks like our activist friend has found a new way to “contribute” to the university’s budget! €900 for some wall art? Talk about a pricey canvas! 🎨💸

Just another day in Belgium where 900 euros can buy you a spot on the local art scene—who knew vandalism came with a price tag? 😂 Might as well call it an investment in modern expression, eh?

  7. Looks like the next Picasso just got a €900 lesson in art appreciation—who knew vandalism came with a price tag? 🎨💸

Just imagine paying €900 for a bit of artistic expression—talk about an expensive paint job! 🎨💸 Seems like the real crime here is the price tag, not the graffiti!

So, one artist gets a €900 bill for a bit of spray-paint therapy, while the others walk away like they just dodged a round of beers at the pub. I guess in Leuven, graffiti really is the new art form—just with a side of hefty fines! 😂💸

  10. Just what Leuven needed—a €900 piece of art that’ll make the university’s walls look like a trendy gallery, eh? 🎨 Who knew graffiti could cost more than a fine bottle of wine? 🍷

Fining someone €900 for a bit of artistic expression? Brilliant! Who needs a thriving art scene when we can just slap on penalty stickers instead? 🎨💸

  12. Only €900 for some artistic expression? At this rate, I might just start charging my clients for my “masterpieces” on the office walls. 😂

Looks like the real crime here is having a sense of humor about €900 for some paint on a wall! 😂 Next time, maybe just stick to a nice postcard, eh?

What a brilliant way to express your political views—nothing says “I care” quite like a €900 fine for some spray paint art! 🎨💸 Next time, maybe stick to a nice placard, eh?

  15. €900 for a little artistic expression? Talk about a pricey paint job! 🤔 In Belgium, I guess even graffiti needs a budget! 🎨💸

  16. Looks like one lucky artist is now €900 poorer for trying to paint a Picasso in a world of stick figures. Good on the court for turning a vandalism case into a masterclass on how to dodge responsibility, eh? 🎨💸

Only €900 for a bit of artistic expression? Guess the university doesn’t appreciate modern art as much as they claim. 🎨💸

€900 for a bit of paint? Seems like a bargain compared to the cost of trying to make sense of that court decision! 🎨💸 What a way to keep the art scene alive, eh?
