Greened street furniture: JCDecaux confirms the benefits of this experiment
Paris, 21 May 2026 – For World Biodiversity Day on 22 May, JCDecaux SE (Euronext Paris: DEC), the leading outdoor advertising company globally, alongside the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (LPO – French League for the Protection of Birds), reveals promising results from its greening experiment involving 19 street furniture items. This initiative, running since April 2024 between the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, France, aims to enhance urban biodiversity.
As part of a strategy to create ecological continuity between parks and tree-lined areas, JCDecaux’s greened street furniture promotes micro-ecosystems that support a variety of plant species, insects, and birds. Since 2024, there has been annual nesting activity across 17 nesting boxes along the route, with increasing numbers each year. Between April and May 2026, eight nesting boxes were home to great tits or blue tits, resulting in the successful fledging of around twenty nestlings.
Featuring a wide range of nectar-producing plants selected by ecologists, these green spaces attract diverse insects, including 11 identified pollinator species such as honeybees, bumblebees, and butterflies. The ecological appeal of these installations, along with their quality of design, is evidenced by this level of activity, transforming them into genuine biodiversity havens.
Whether transformative or incremental, JCDecaux’s innovations aim to enhance urban life quality. The greening of street furniture complements JCDecaux’s portfolio of products and services, including bus shelters, CIPs, self-cleaning toilets, self-service bicycles, and digital street furniture. This initiative aligns with JCDecaux’s business model, where brand communication funds public services for the benefit of local communities and the wider public interest.
Jean-Charles Decaux, Chairman of the Executive Board and Co-Chief Executive Officer of JCDecaux, stated: “Innovation is a core aspect of JCDecaux’s identity. Since 1964, our mission has been to improve urban life quality by providing aesthetic, service-driven, and sustainable street furniture, funded by advertising. By greening our assets, designed by expert teams, we contribute to biodiversity protection and support life development in urban environments. Partnering with the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (LPO) strengthens our expertise. We are pleased with these promising results: a rich variety of flora and fauna is colonizing these structures, enabling movement and interaction within an urban setting between two major biodiversity reservoirs. We will continue this path by installing new nesting boxes on already greened bus shelters, offering optimal conditions for other bird species. This experiment illustrates that street furniture can become a vital link in the ecological continuum.”
