Bratislava – Slovakia’s foreign policy remains unchanged, emphasizing its status as a free, independent, and sovereign republic following democratic elections. This was the statement made by Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) in response to former Slovak foreign minister and current member of the opposition Progressive Slovakia party, Ivan Korčok. On Tuesday, Korčok submitted a letter to the ministry’s registry urging the government to safeguard Slovakia’s standing within Europe, as well as its membership in the EU and NATO, reported TASR.
Blanár criticized the appeal as being based on falsehoods and manipulation, intended to incite public emotion and further Korčok’s unfulfilled political ambitions. He emphasized that Slovakia’s foreign policy is firmly rooted in the government’s program statement and the joint declaration by the nation’s highest constitutional leaders.
He reminded Korčok that Slovakia is a sovereign member of both the European Union (EU) and NATO.
“What the opposition fails to comprehend is that our government is dedicated to advocating for the interests of the Slovak Republic, rather than representing the interests of others, as previous administrations did,” Blanár asserted.
Blanár further dismissed the opposition’s claims that the Slovak government is becoming isolated, pointing out that the president, prime minister, and ministers have been active in meeting and engaging with representatives from around the globe.
“I urge Mr. Korčok to provide the signatories of his misleading appeal with accurate information instead of fabrications that only aim to sway public opinion,” he stated.
Korčok delivered the appeal, which bore nearly 80,000 signatures from citizens, to the foreign ministry on Tuesday. The appeal urges the government to reconsider its prior actions that, according to the signatories, are distancing Slovakia from Europe. (March 4)
