Observers anticipated that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and former U.S. President Donald Trump would discuss matters including Ukraine, the potential imposition of U.S. tariffs on European businesses, and the situation in the Middle East during their meeting. However, a top priority for Meloni is securing a rapid resolution to the detention of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala in Iran.
Sala’s arrest in Tehran came after Italian authorities detained an Iranian national sought by the United States, Mohammad Abedini-Najafabad. A significant diplomatic breakthrough—such as the U.S. withdrawing its extradition request or offering Iran concessions—could expedite Sala’s release, which would be a major political victory for Meloni at home.
Media reports revealed that Meloni and Trump convened for a 90-minute meeting before attending a screening of a documentary questioning the criminal investigations into John Eastman, Trump’s former attorney. Addressing an audience at his Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump reportedly described the occasion as “very exciting” and praised Meloni, calling her a “fantastic woman” and “the prime minister of Italy.”
“She’s really taken Europe by storm,” Trump declared, according to the reports.
Meloni’s visit to Mar-a-Lago is likely to fuel aspirations among her supporters that she could become a key European figure in Trump’s circle, should he return to power, even as she aligns with President Joe Biden’s administration on the issue of Ukraine. The Italian leader and Trump previously crossed paths last month during the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
Meloni’s political network also extends to Elon Musk, the prominent tech mogul regarded as a close ally of Trump. This connection further elevates her standing as a significant transatlantic player.
