Spain’s policy of legalizing migrants has sparked significant debate both nationally and at the European level. Meloni and Sánchez clashed over the issue during a recent meeting of European leaders.

Manfred Weber, President of the European People’s Party, has advocated for stricter migration measures regarding the Ceuta crisis, emphasizing on X that “the Migration Pact and return regulation must be enforced today, not tomorrow.”
European Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner, also from the EPP, mentioned that the Commission has been aiding Spain in securing its borders, specifically in Ceuta, and that he’s been in contact with Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
A spokesperson highlighted the Commission’s approval of “the close cooperation between Morocco and Spain to address these flows and ensure the prompt return of those who entered Ceuta illegally, in accordance with the applicable rules.”
The spokesperson further stated, “When it comes to our cooperation with partner countries: Morocco is a key and trusted partner of the EU. In recent years, we have intensified cooperation on migration, border management, and anti-smuggling, and we are now working to elevate our relationship to a comprehensive and strategic partnership.”
