Infant Jesus’s Head Stolen from Brussels Nativity: Bouchez Sparks Debate

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The infant Jesus’ head was stolen from Brussels’ Étoffes de la Nativité on Grote Markt. Artist Victoria-Maria’s faceless, recycled-fabric figures sparked debate; Georges-Louis Bouchez criticised them publicly.

As HLN News reported, a renewed nativity scene on the Grote Markt was damaged after the head of the infant Jesus was stolen from Brussels. The figure was found on Saturday morning, Nov 29, 2025, without its cloth head, which was taken by the perpetrator. Police were alerted when the damage was discovered.

What happened to the infant Jesus’ head at the Brussels Nativity scene?

Spokesperson Victor Kanyanzira, speaking for Mayor Philippe Close, said that such incidents are not unusual in open holiday displays. Nativity scenes in public squares often face theft or tampering during the festive season.

According to Victor Kanyanzira,

“It happens every year, unfortunately. The head is quickly replaced.”

The nativity scene called Étoffes de la Nativité was created by artist Victoria-Maria and presented as a modern interpretation. It is made from recycled fabrics, and the figures have no faces, only colourful textile patches. The city explains that this style is meant to show inclusivity and a shared identity among all people.

The unveiling of the scene has led to mixed reactions. Some viewers appreciate the message behind the design, while others find the faceless figures unusual. The debate intensified on Saturday, Nov 29, 2025, when Georges-Louis Bouchez criticised the installation on X.

“This nativity scene is an insult to our traditions. It must be replaced immediately. It is unacceptable how our traditions are crumbling under the guise of inclusivity.”

He wrote that the figures looked

“more like zombies at Brussels stations than a real nativity scene”

and asked for a return to a classic display. His remark spread quickly and added to the ongoing public discussion about how Christmas traditions should be shown in the city.

The new nativity scene on the Grand‑Place in Brussels, called Étoffes de la Nativité, was unveiled on 26 November 2025. It replaces the old wooden stable that had stood on the square for more than 25 years and had become worn and difficult to move. The display was set in a transparent pavilion with soft lighting. The city plans to keep this modern nativity scene in place for at least 5 years, until 2029, as part of the holiday program on the square.

A headless nativity scene in Brussels, eh? Quite the festive upgrade from traditional charm to modern art – soon we’ll be putting Santa in a clown suit to really spice things up! 🎅🦸‍♂️

  2. Just what we needed—an avant-garde nativity scene that leaves the baby Jesus a bit “headless,” eh? Nothing says ‘traditional Christmas’ like faceless zombies at the market—bloody brilliant! 🎭😅

Nice to see the baby Jesus getting ahead in life… or rather, losing it! 😅 Who needs tradition when we can have a modern art installation that looks like it was built from the leftovers of a fabric shop, right?

Oh, fantastic! Nothing says “holiday spirit” quite like a faceless Jesus playing hide and seek—what’s next, a vegan Santa? 🎅🎄

Looks like someone’s having a bit of a meltdown over a headless Jesus in Brussels—next, they’ll be telling us the Mona Lisa needs a haircut! 😂 Maybe we should just add a beanie to the nativity scene and call it modern art, eh?

Stealing the infant Jesus’s head? Classic Brussels—where even nativity scenes can’t catch a break. 🎭 Next year, let’s just put up a “please don’t touch” sign and call it a day, shall we? 😂

Typical Brussels, innit? Can’t even keep the Baby Jesus’s head on straight without someone nicking it—just wait till the thieves start dressing up the figures in designer clothes! 😂

  8. Just when you thought Brussels couldn’t get any more avant-garde, they go ahead and lose the head of the infant Jesus. 😂 Talk about taking inclusivity to new heights – or should I say, new lows?

  9. Only in Brussels would someone steal the head of the infant Jesus—probably to give it a proper makeover for the next fashion week. 🎭 Who knew inclusivity meant a faceless nativity? Classic!

Stealing the infant Jesus’s head? Must be a new take on “headless horseman” for the festive season! 😂 Honestly, if this is the state of our holiday traditions, I’d say let’s just skip to the chocolate and call it a day! 🍫

Stolen heads at a nativity scene? Just another Tuesday in Brussels, I suppose. 😂 Maybe next year they’ll just use a pumpkin instead; it’s way less trouble.

  12. Nothing says “holiday spirit” quite like a headless infant Jesus, right? 😂 Just when you thought Brussels couldn’t get any more avant-garde, they go and turn the nativity scene into a modern art installation – pure genius!

Guess the nativity scene was a bit too avant-garde for Brussels—who knew Jesus could go missing faster than a taxi in rush hour? 😂 Just wait till they start stealing the recycled fabric next!

So, let me get this straight – the infant Jesus is headless now, and it’s a debate starter? Blimey, what’s next, a nativity scene featuring a vegan Santa? 😂

Only in Brussels would a missing Jesus head spark more debate than a football match. 🤦‍♂️ Next, they’ll be telling us faceless figures are the latest fashion trend—talk about a nativity scene gone wrong! 😅

Seems like the only thing more faceless than the nativity figures in Brussels is the debate on how to celebrate Christmas. 😂 Who knew inclusivity came with a side of missing heads?

Imagine a nativity scene where the baby Jesus is headless—talk about a Christmas miracle gone wrong! 🎄 Maybe they were just trying to save on fabric costs? 🤷‍♂️

Looks like Brussels has decided that stealing the head off the infant Jesus is the new tradition; if only they put as much effort into their chocolate. 🤦‍♂️ Maybe next year they’ll just hang a sign saying, “Your head could be here!” instead.

Seems like even the Infant Jesus is getting a makeover these days—who knew recycling could lead to such heavenly headless art? 😂 Next thing you know, we’ll be replacing the Three Wise Men with hipsters on scooters!
