I. Matovič: The EP Delegation to Monitor the Rule of Law Was Not Requested by the Slovak Opposition

Bratislava – The opposition has not requested the delegation from the European Parliament (EP) that arrived in Slovakia on Monday to assess the rule of law. Members of the European Parliament are entitled to be informed about conditions in Slovakia, stated Igor Matovič, chairman of the opposition movement Slovakia and a member of the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic, at a press conference on Monday, according to TASR.

“I sincerely hope that the MEPs visiting the government office will not be cowed by Robert Fico’s threats, as he attempts to undermine their credibility beforehand. He labels them as individuals who came at the request of the Slovak opposition. None of us contacted them,” Matovič remarked.

Veronika Remišová, chairwoman of the opposition party For the People, highlighted that government officials are attacking the judiciary, security forces, and freedom of expression.

“A warning to the members of the euro-delegation arriving in Slovakia: Euro MPs should be vigilant if they notice anyone unusual in glasses trailing or photographing them. That’s the situation here in Slovakia. When a critical European Parliament mission comes, instead of learning from it, the government coalition has them followed,” Remišová noted, referencing remarks by Czech MEP Tomáš Zdechovský, who led a previous EP delegation and alleged he was shadowed by Slovak secret services during his visit.

Michal Šimečka, leader of the opposition movement PS and a member of the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic, expressed optimism that the second EP delegation’s reception in Slovakia would improve compared to the last. He emphasized the regularity of oversight by EU delegations.

“It demonstrates paranoid thinking when the Prime Minister describes these individuals as hired assassins merely for checking the use of European funds. The Minister of the Interior referred to it as a terrorist or criminal mission, and the Deputy Speaker of Parliament labeled it a hybrid operation or threat. What kind of comments are these against our EU partners and a European institution that oversees the usage of EU funds?” Šimečka inquired.

A four-member delegation from the EP Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) arrived in Bratislava on Monday to evaluate the current state of democracy, rule of law, and the respect of fundamental rights in Slovakia.

The delegation intends to engage with representatives from the Slovak government, the NR SR, the judiciary, the ombudsman, and various relevant authorities, organizations, and stakeholders, including media representatives and NGOs focused on human rights, democracy, and non-discrimination. “I sincerely hope that the MEPs visiting the government office will not be cowed by Robert Fico’s threats, as he attempts to undermine their credibility beforehand. He labels them as individuals who came at the request of the Slovak opposition. None of us contacted them.”” Igor Matovič.

Looks like Slovakia’s got its own version of ‘House of Cards’—who knew the MEPs were just here for a holiday and not to rescue democracy? 🤷‍♂️ Typical, innit?

Typical Slovak politics, where MEPs are treated like visitors to a circus rather than dignitaries! 🎪 One can only hope they have a good map for dodging the clowns and shadows lurking nearby. 🕵️‍♂️

Seems like the only thing scarier than Fico’s threats is the idea that MEPs might actually care who invited them. 😂 Who knew rule of law monitoring was such a high-stakes game in Slovakia?

Seems like Slovakia’s got its own version of “who invited these guys?”—guess they thought a Euro delegation was just a casual brunch invite. 🍽️🙄

Seems like the only thing flying in Slovakia is the government’s imagination—who knew a bunch of MEPs could spark such a ruckus? Maybe next time, they’ll arrive in disguise to avoid being shadowed by the local “super sleuths” 🕵️‍♂️.

Seems like the only thing Slovakia is missing is a ‘Welcome to the Circus’ sign for our esteemed Euro MPs—because who doesn’t love a bit of shadowy photo ops while discussing democracy? 🎪😂

Typical Slovak drama, eh? MEPs popping in to check the rule of law, and suddenly they’re labelled as unwelcome guests—next, they’ll be asking for a schengen visa just to step in 😏.

Gotta love the irony of a government needing a babysitter from Brussels to check on their democracy—what’s next, a playdate with the judiciary? 😂 Better watch out for those “hired assassins” armed with nothing but questions! 🕵️‍♂️

Just what Slovakia needed, another bunch of Eurocrats on a fact-finding mission—because clearly, we haven’t had enough of those! 🤦‍♂️ Makes you wonder if they’ll come back with souvenirs or just more bureaucratic nonsense. 🥴

Looks like the only thing more transparent than Slovakia’s rule of law is Matovič’s attempt to play it cool while dodging Fico’s shadowy threats. 🤔🕶️ Who knew politics could be so… theatrical?

Typical Slovakia, where even the EU delegation is treated like an uninvited guest at a family wedding. Guess they’ll have to watch their backs as closely as their wallets around here! 😂💼

Imagine having a delegation to check on democracy, but instead of a welcome party, they get a ‘surveillance chic’ experience! 🤦‍♂️ Classic Slovakia, where visiting MEPs might as well pack a pair of sunglasses and a good detective novel. 🕶️📚
