SOFIA – More than 350,000 Bulgarians living in remote areas will gain access to high-speed internet through a European Union (EU) funded initiative, as announced by the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Communications.
A total of nearly 240 million euros has been allocated for this initiative, with a call for interested companies to submit their proposals by April 11. A key objective is to establish broadband internet networks in regions lacking market interest for such developments.
Half of the allocated funds will be specifically aimed at remote, rural, and sparsely populated areas. The initiative also includes the enhancement and expansion of optical connectivity to 140 municipal centers, along with the connection of at least 700 base stations to the newly established networks.
Project proposals must pertain to one of six designated planning regions – Northwest, North Central, Northeast, Southeast, South Central, and Southwest. Participants are required to contribute at least 10% of the total project cost.
Additionally, improvements are anticipated in the state’s telecommunications network, which spans 7,500 kilometers and connects over 1,200 central and local administrations as well as various public organizations. (January 10, 2025)
