Guterres Highlights Challenges and Support for Peacekeepers in Lebanon

UN Chief Visits Lebanon: Highlighting Challenges and Support for Peacekeepers

UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently visited Lebanon, where he underscored the critical role of peacekeepers amid escalating challenges in the region. His itinerary included a trip to Naqoura in southern Lebanon, the headquarters of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), as well as high-level discussions in Beirut with key Lebanese and international leaders.

A Glimpse at the Frontline of Peace

During his visit to Naqoura, Mr. Guterres toured UNIFIL positions that had been targeted by Israeli forces last year. Highlighting the courage and resilience of peacekeepers operating in such a volatile environment, he expressed gratitude for their determination in upholding a fragile ceasefire along the Blue Line—a buffer zone separating Hezbollah militants and Israeli forces.

“You are not just on the Blue Line of Lebanon but on the frontline of peace,” stated Mr. Guterres, emphasizing that serving in UNIFIL represents one of the most demanding assignments for peacekeepers globally.

The Secretary-General also voiced concerns over ongoing violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. He criticized the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for occupying areas within UNIFIL’s operational zone and conducting military incursions into Lebanese territory, actions that significantly endanger peacekeepers’ safety. Furthermore, he noted that since November 27, UNIFIL personnel have uncovered over 100 weapons caches belonging to Hezbollah and other armed groups, underscoring the persistent security challenges in the area.

Strengthening Support for Lebanon’s Armed Forces

In addition to his visit to UNIFIL, Mr. Guterres met with the commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon. He reiterated the temporary nature of the UN presence and stressed the importance of bolstering Lebanon’s military capacity.

“UNIFIL is here to do everything possible to support the Lebanese Armed Forces,” he said, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the UN mission and Lebanese authorities to maintain peace and stability in the region.

Diplomacy in Beirut

Later that day, Mr. Guterres returned to Beirut, where he engaged in discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, who was also in the Lebanese capital. Their talks covered a broad spectrum of regional developments, reflecting the global community’s vested interest in Lebanon’s stability.

In the evening, the Secretary-General attended a working dinner with Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and UNIFIL Force Commander General Aroldo Lázaro. These conversations provided an opportunity to address pressing challenges in Lebanon while exploring the role of international partnerships in supporting the country’s recovery.

Looking Ahead

Mr. Guterres’ visit will continue with a full day of meetings in Beirut on Saturday. He is scheduled to meet key Lebanese leaders, including President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister-designate Nawaf Salam, and Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri. These discussions are expected to focus on Lebanon’s ongoing political and economic crises, as well as efforts to ensure stability and recovery.

Lebanon is currently grappling with severe political instability, economic hardship, and security threats. The Secretary-General’s presence in the country underscores the United Nations’ unwavering commitment to supporting Lebanon and its people. It also highlights the vital role of UN peacekeepers in fostering peace and security in one of the world’s most complex and challenging regions.

  1. Oh, how lovely! A UN chief on a “peace tour” while the locals are probably just trying to find a decent cup of coffee without dodging bullets. But hey, at least someone’s got the “frontline of peace” selfie sorted! 📸☕️

  2. Just what we needed, another grand tour from Guterres in Lebanon! Can’t wait for the next episode of “Keeping the Peace: The Sequel,” starring peacekeepers dodging bullets while the politicians have their fancy dinners. 🍽️💼
