Paris – François Villeroy de Galhau, the Governor of the Bank of France, expressed concern over the rising trade tensions linked to Donald Trump’s renewed leadership in the United States and the increasing announcements of tariff barriers.
On Friday, during an interview with France Inter radio, he stated, “What’s happening in the United States represents very bad news, especially for the American economy.”
Villeroy de Galhau criticized the Trump administration’s economic perspective, likening it to a game of Monopoly, where one player’s gain results in another’s loss. “That’s not the true nature of economics,” he said.
He emphasized that the economy should focus on collective prosperity through the exchange of talents, ideas, products, and innovations, noting, “We are depriving ourselves of all these opportunities.”
The banker pointed out that after a promising start to the year, forecasts for American growth are being downgraded, with some starting to raise concerns about a potential recession in the U.S. (March 14, 2025)
