Today, Silvio Gonzato, the European Union Ambassador to Albania, met with Klodjan Braho, the newly elected head of the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), who took office at the end of last year.
SPAK is one of the institutions created as part of Albania’s Justice reform, which has strong backing from the country’s international partners.
Gonzato congratulated Braho on SPAK’s accomplishments so far and highlighted the necessity for continued concrete results in combating organized crime and corruption, viewing this as essential for Albania’s advancement towards European Union membership.
He emphasized that enhancing investigative capabilities and ensuring high standards in investigations and prosecutions are vital for securing progress and achieving sustainable outcomes.
Gonzato reiterated that the European Union is fully dedicated to supporting SPAK and upholding the rule of law in Albania.
Klodian Braho was appointed head of SPAK in December 2025 for a term of three years, succeeding Altin Dumani.
In its conclusions on the enlargement process published at the end of last year, the European Council recognized the significant progress made by Albania, which has led to the opening of all negotiating chapter clusters, noting that the pace of negotiations will largely depend on progress in the “Fundamentals” cluster.
The Council positively assessed Albania’s advancements in implementing justice reform and in the European integration process, underlining the importance of maintaining the high standards set by the vetting process.
Furthermore, the Council stressed the need to respect the independence of the judiciary and the role of SPAK.
