Gaza Crisis Worsens Amid Prolonged Siege
The humanitarian situation in the North Gaza governorate has reached a critical state following a siege lasting over two months, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric revealed in his daily briefing from New York.
Basic services remain severely restricted, further exacerbating the plight of residents. In light of these challenges, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has emerged as a crucial support system for the population in Gaza, providing vital assistance despite the dire circumstances.

UNRWA's Lifeline Efforts
Since the conflict began in October 2023, UNRWA has played a significant role in delivering healthcare services. The agency has facilitated approximately 6.7 million medical consultations across Gaza this year, reaching over half of the population in need.
Currently, over 90 mobile teams operate at 54 medical points, both inside and outside shelters, in areas like the Middle Area, Khan Younis, Al Mawasi, and Gaza governorate. Despite these efforts, only seven of UNRWA’s 27 health centers remain functional. “The number of operational health facilities is constantly changing due to insecurity and access restrictions,” Dujarric stated.

Dwindling Medicine Stocks
UNRWA has warned that its health centers are running dangerously low on essential medicines, with at least 60 critical items expected to be depleted within a month. Broader shortages of medical supplies and medicines persist in Gaza, largely due to restricted access and the limited availability of safe routes to transport supplies into the region.

Guterres Appeals for Global Justice for Africa
During his visit to Lesotho, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for greater African representation in global decision-making processes. Addressing the parliament in Lesotho, Guterres emphasized the deep injustices stemming from colonialism that continue to marginalize the continent on the world stage.
Highlighting the UN Security Council’s composition as an example, he criticized the absence of a permanent African seat nearly 80 years after the council’s inception. “This hurts Africa, but it also undermines the Council’s effectiveness, legitimacy, and credibility,” he said.
Guterres called for stronger African leadership in global crises, particularly in conflicts from Sudan to the Sahel, while advocating for reforms in areas including debt relief and climate financing to address longstanding inequities.

Escalation of Violence in Myanmar
The Secretary-General also voiced concern over escalating violence in Myanmar, which has intensified civilian suffering and displacement. Indiscriminate aerial attacks have led to mounting casualties, worsening the humanitarian crisis in a country under military rule since February 2021.
Guterres urged all parties to halt the violence and uphold their obligations under international law to protect civilians. He also stressed the importance of preventing further intercommunal tensions in the conflict-ridden nation.

Myanmar’s Ongoing Opium Crisis
Despite a slight decline in opium production, Myanmar remains the world’s largest producer of opium and heroin. According to the latest survey by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), opium cultivation has decreased by 4%—from 47,100 hectares to 45,200 hectares—but production levels remain high.
The report highlights uneven reductions in cultivation across Myanmar and uncertainties regarding how Afghanistan’s drug ban will impact global demand. UNODC Regional Representative Masood Karimipour warned of a potential expansion in Myanmar’s opium economy amid persistent conflict and shifting global supply chains.
“As conflict in the country remains intense and the global market adjusts to changes in Afghanistan, there is a significant risk of further growth in cultivation over the coming years,” Karimipour stated.

These developments across Gaza, Africa, and Myanmar underscore the urgent need for international cooperation, justice, and action to address overlapping crises and challenges.
