Gentbrugge (Eurotoday) – The 6 IVAGO recycling parks located in Ghent and Destelbergen remain closed this weekend due to union labor action. Twenty people, comprising 50% of the park rangers, joined an International Women’s Day demonstration.
The 6 IVAGO recycling parks in Ghent and Destelbergen will remain shut over the weekend as labor unions use the occasion of International Women’s Day to conduct their strike. With 10 out of 20 park rangers participating, IVAGO has opted to temporarily close the recycling parks to prevent operational difficulties. The decision was also influenced by weather forecasts predicting sunny conditions, which typically attract more visitors for spring cleaning.
The KMI forecasts a bright and sunny weekend, meaning that those in Ghent planning to undertake spring cleaning will not be able to visit the recycling parks in the city tomorrow.
“In Ghent and Destelbergen, the 6 recycling parks will remain closed,”
stated Sandra Deneef of waste management company IVAGO.
“Tomorrow, there will be an action in the context of International Women’s Rights Day. We consulted with employees in advance to determine their participation. Half of the 20 park rangers have chosen not to come to work. Given the favorable weather conditions, we have decided to close the parks as a precautionary measure. Normal opening hours will resume on Monday,”
IVAGO also confirmed.
Why are recycling parks important in Ghent and Destelbergen?
Residents of Ghent and Destelbergen rely on recycling parks to properly dispose of both recyclable and non-recyclable waste. The six container parks operated by IVAGO play a crucial role in waste management and sustainability efforts. IVAGO’s parks process thousands of tons of waste annually, contributing significantly to local environmental objectives.
The six recycling centers in Ghent and Destelbergen experience peak activity during weekends in the spring months, as locals undertake their annual spring cleaning. With KMI predicting sunny weather this weekend, recycling parks would typically see an increase in visitors. However, with 50% of park rangers participating in the union action, operations have been disrupted.

Just what we needed—perfect spring cleaning weather and a recycling park closure. Brilliant move, mate! Guess we’ll just have to toss our old stuff in the garden until Monday! 🌞🙄

Oh, fantastic timing! Just when the sun decides to shine and everyone wants to declutter their lives, Ghent’s recycling parks take a holiday for Women’s Day. Who knew saving the planet could be so inconvenient? 🌞🙄

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need on a sunny weekend—watching our rubbish pile up while the park rangers join a women’s rights parade. Nothing says “environmental sustainability” like a closed recycling park! 😅💩

Oh, what a surprise! Just when you think it’s time for a spring clean, the recycling parks decide to join in on the fun by going on strike. ☀️ Because nothing screams “women’s rights” quite like a pile of unsorted rubbish in your backyard, right? 😂
