Berlin (dpa) – The Greens in Germany are supporting the European Union’s significant trade agreement with India, shortly after their members in the European Parliament played a pivotal role in questioning the bloc’s agreement with the South American Mercosur nations.
Andreas Audretsch, the party’s deputy leader in the German parliament, stated that the trade deal with India, announced earlier on Tuesday, is beneficial for both businesses and employees in Germany.
Audretsch emphasized that in light of the “destructive rage” from US President Donald Trump, Europe ought to forge new trade and cooperative alliances.
The agreement was finalized at an EU-India summit in New Delhi, where European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the deal on Tuesday.
“Today, the EU and India make history, enhancing the partnership between the world’s largest democracies,” von der Leyen remarked.
This latest deal is expected to be less comprehensive than the agreement recently finalized between the EU and the Mercosur nations: Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
Last week, several Green lawmakers in Brussels supported sending the Mercosur agreement to the European Court of Justice (ECJ), which could significantly delay its ratification. Their votes were crucial in passing the motion, drawing sharp criticism towards the party in Germany, where the export-driven economy could benefit from increased trade.
In a statement, the Green leadership indicated that Germany requires “new economic partnerships” to diversify its foreign trade. “Thus, it is essential to provisionally apply the agreement with the Mercosur countries and proceed to ratification,” the statement concluded. (January 27)
