Germany Urges Europe to Learn from Ukraine’s Drone Warfare Successes

Wadephul isn’t the only one advocating for increased investment in advanced drones like those developed by Ukraine. Last week, during a major military exercise in Champagne, French President Emmanuel Macron also highlighted the significance of drone technology for national defense.

Drones, as demonstrated by Ukraine, can be produced swiftly and are effective against more costly technologies. Their relevance is heightened as Europe aims to strengthen its defenses against Russia, especially with the United States pulling back.

The Pentagon announced last week that 5,000 U.S. troops would be withdrawn from Germany in the coming year. This announcement occurred amid a growing conflict between U.S. President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who criticized Washington’s lack of a clear strategy to conclude its war in Iran and accused the U.S. of being “humiliated” by Tehran.

Trump has also threatened to withdraw U.S. troops from Spain and Italy, whose leaders have been critical of the war on Iran. Additionally, the U.S. president has contemplated withdrawing from NATO for some time.

On Monday, Wadephul aimed to mitigate concerns regarding a large-scale withdrawal of U.S. troops from Europe and expressed confidence in NATO’s conventional deterrence capabilities in Europe.

“I am firmly convinced that the U.S. appreciates the value and importance of NATO, including for its own security,” he stated, expressing confidence that the alliance’s conventional deterrence capability would not be affected by the changes. Despite multiple public statements by Trump deriding NATO, Wadephul remains optimistic.

Sure, let’s just slap some drones together like IKEA furniture and call it a defense strategy, shall we? 🚁🇩🇪 If only we could assemble a coherent plan as quickly as Ukraine built their drone fleet, maybe we wouldn’t be in this sticky situation with the Yanks!
