The package includes new contracts for air defense systems, munitions, and logistical support, such as maintenance infrastructure and satellite communications.
Wednesday’s announcement follows just two days after Merz reignited Germany’s Taurus missile debate by lifting range restrictions on Western-supplied weapons publicly.
At the WDR Europaforum on Monday, Merz stated: “There are no more range limitations for weapons delivered to Ukraine. Neither from the Brits, nor the French, nor from us. Not from the Americans either.” He stressed Ukraine’s right to target military infrastructure on Russian territory.
This change could allow Berlin to deliver Taurus cruise missiles, a request blocked by the former government led by Olaf Scholz due to fears of escalating the war. The Taurus system, with a 500+ kilometer range, would enable precise strikes deep into Russian territory.
Germany also confirmed funding a major portion of Starlink satellite coverage in Ukraine to secure communications as Kyiv prepares for intensified Russian attacks.
“This marks the beginning of a new form of military-industrial cooperation between our countries,” Merz stated, describing the partnership as one with “great potential.” He declined to discuss specific weapon systems.
