Flasbarth stated that Germany might host UN talks with adequate notice. “We would have no concerns about hosting a conference, but it should be part of an orderly process, not a stopgap.”
The talks’ location rotates among five groups. Turkey, Germany, the U.K., and Australia belong to the same group, requiring a consensus decision. Germany, France, and the U.K. have publicly supported Australia’s bid with Pacific island nations.
The U.K. is involved in the standoff as Turkish diplomats claim the U.K. promised to support Turkey’s bid for the 2026 talks, known as COP31, in exchange for Turkey dropping its attempt to host the 2021 event. This conference occurred in Glasgow after Turkey withdrew, gaining diplomatic favors.
Ankara claims the U.K. breached its promise by backing Australia. British diplomats assert the U.K. only agreed to consider the bid.
This week, German officials questioned if Britain might make a peace offering to Turkey to allow Australia to host COP31 in Adelaide.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wrote to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, suggesting Turkey host the segment for world leaders’ speeches. Erdoğan has not responded, according to two sources familiar with the situation.
