Belgian authorities have detained two individuals suspected of planning an attack on De Wever. Investigators stated on Thursday that they are examining evidence of a plan involving a drone to detonate a potential explosive device as part of a “jihadist-inspired terrorist attack,” in addition to bomb components created with a 3D printer.
This thwarted plot occurs as Europe rushes to address a growing drone threat. Over the past month, swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles have breached the airspaces of Belgium, Poland, Romania, Denmark, and Norway.
Outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof expressed that it was “completely unacceptable” for Wilders to halt his campaign, leading the far-right candidate to skip a crucial radio debate hosted by Dutch state broadcaster NOS on Friday evening.
“I am confident that all security organizations and services will collaborate closely and do everything possible to ensure the safe conduct of campaigns and elections,” Schoof stated on X. “This is absolutely crucial for our democracy.”
Wilders has faced numerous threats throughout his two-decade political career, including threats from Al-Qaeda militants in 2020 and a former Pakistani cricketer, who received a 12-year prison sentence in absentia for incitement to murder in 2023.
