“The January round marks the first since October 2023 where partners were able to meet 100% of the minimum caloric requirement,” UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated to journalists on Monday.
This contrasts with the end of 2025, when families received only 50 to 75% of the necessary calories for health.
To tackle food insecurity, the UN supports the production of around 170,000 two-kilo bread bundles daily.
About a third of the bread is given free to over 400 shelters and community sites, while the rest is sold at a lower price.
Aid must remain ‘unimpeded’
Mr. Dujarric noted that last week, the UN and partners delivered over 10,000 metric tonnes of aid via the Karim Shalom, Karem Abu Salam, and Zikim crossings.
Items included food, cooking ingredients, animal fodder, soap, hygiene products, diapers, winter clothing, blankets, and mattresses.
The Israeli government’s decision to halt some NGO operations poses a threat to essential civilian aid, over 50 NGOs warned.
In a statement issued Friday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing that Israel should allow “unimpeded” humanitarian aid access.
Violence continues
Israeli airstrikes, shelling, and gunfire were reported across the Gaza Strip from Tuesday to Friday last week, according to the UN aid coordination office (OCHA).
Citing the Gaza Ministry of Health, OCHA reported that by Thursday, five Palestinians were killed and 11 injured in the past 48 hours in the Gaza Strip.
This occurs amid harsh winter conditions and destructive storms damaging infrastructure and straining water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
