From Collaborative R&I to Scaled-Up Impact in Waterborne: Leveraging EU Research Excellence

The European Union's Research and Innovation Excellence Drives Sustainable Solutions

The European Union’s dedication to collaborative research and innovation is yielding impactful results. Breakthrough technologies funded under the EU’s Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programs are now progressing to large-scale implementation with the backing of the Innovation Fund. These efforts position Europe as a global leader in addressing climate challenges, fostering a greener and more sustainable future.

Transformative Waterborne Projects Supported by EU Research and Innovation (R&I)

1. SUSTAINSEA – Reducing CO₂ Emissions in Maritime Transport through Wind Power

Spanish startup Bound 4 Blue has revolutionized maritime transport with its wind-assisted propulsion systems, designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Supported by the European Space Agency and the EIT Climate-KIC Accelerator, the company advanced its technology through Horizon Europe projects such as:

RETROFIT55: Developing wind-assisted ship propulsion.
ZHENIT: Focusing on wingsail propulsion for zero-waste vessels.
SeaStars: Improving energy efficiency and cutting emissions across eight vessel designs.
TwinShip: Accelerating maritime digital and environmental transformation toward net-zero emissions by 2045.

The Innovation Fund-supported SUSTAINSEA project is now deploying these systems on five large cargo vessels. This initiative has the potential to reduce emissions by up to 91%, significantly decreasing reliance on fossil fuels.

2. SOL – Sustainable Marine Fuels from Sugar Oil

Vertoro BV, a pioneer in sustainable biofuels, is advancing the use of Crude Sugar Oil (CSO™), produced from cellulose. The company’s efforts were bolstered by several EU programs, including:

IDEALFUEL (Horizon 2020): Converting lignin (a biomass byproduct) into renewable maritime biofuels.
EHLCATHOL (Horizon 2020): Developing methods to transform lignin waste into liquid fuels.
CARBIOW (Horizon Europe): Exploring bioenergy-based approaches to fuel production.

With Innovation Fund backing, the SOL project is now validating and scaling this sustainable fuel for maritime use, achieving over 80% greenhouse gas reductions compared to conventional fuels.

3. GREENMOTRIL – Transforming the Port of Motril into a Green Energy Hub

Energy company Cuerva is at the forefront of renewable energy innovation, having participated in multiple EU-funded projects:

SYNERGY (Horizon 2020): Creating a Big Energy Data Platform with AI capabilities.
BEYOND (Horizon 2020): Developing a data management platform for advanced AI applications.
COCOON (Horizon Europe): Designing cyber-physical protection strategies.
ODEON (Horizon Europe): Introducing frameworks for energy sector transformation.
TwinEU (Horizon Europe): Delivering digital replicas of energy infrastructure.

Building on this expertise, Cuerva leads the GREENMOTRIL project, funded by the Innovation Fund. The initiative is transforming the Port of Motril into Europe’s first off-grid seaport powered entirely by renewable energy.

4. IRIS – Low-Carbon Hydrogen and Methanol Production with Carbon Capture

Motor Oil (Hellas) is driving innovations in carbon capture and sustainable fuels, supported by EU funding across several projects:

CARMOF (Horizon 2020): Developing advanced CO₂ capture technologies.
AURORA (Horizon Europe): Accelerating carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) chains.
COREU (Horizon Europe): Establishing networks to connect CO₂ emitters with storage sites.
SAFeCRAFT (Horizon Europe): Highlighting the safety and efficiency of sustainable alternative fuels for maritime transport.

Under the Innovation Fund-supported IRIS project, Motor Oil (Hellas) is scaling up carbon capture at an industrial facility in Greece. The project aims to produce 10,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually, a sustainable energy carrier for mobility and industrial applications.

Bridging Innovation and Impact

These examples demonstrate the transformative impact of EU research investments. By leveraging collaborative programs like Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe, the EU is turning innovative ideas into large-scale, real-world solutions. From clean fuels to off-grid seaports, these projects address critical environmental challenges, paving the way for a more sustainable future.

Oh, look at that, the EU’s finally figured out how to sail into the future without choking the fish on fossil fuels! 🌊 Just wait until they start using that wind power to actually blow some sense into their bureaucrats. 😏

  2. Isn’t it lovely how the EU is steering us into a greener future while we’re still trying to find the brakes on our diesel guzzlers? 🚛💨 Next, they’ll have us sailing our ships with a side of fairy dust and optimism! 😂

  3. You’d think with all this EU research funding, they’d at least have the decency to throw a yacht party for us regular folks while they save the planet! 🌍🍹 But hey, wind-assisted ships and sugar oil are just the icing on the cake, right? 😂

  4. Oh, delightful, more “innovative” EU projects to save the planet while we all wait in line for our next bureaucratic meeting. 🚀 If only cutting emissions was as easy as cutting through red tape! 😂

You’d think with all this EU funding for fancy tech, we’d finally see a ship that sails itself to the pub! 🍻 But hey, at least the cargo won’t be belching out CO₂ while it’s at it, right? 😏

Talk about a classy way to tackle climate change! I mean, turning the ocean into a giant wind turbine while sipping a latte? Only in Europe, mate! 🌍☕️

Seems like the EU is finally putting its money where its mouth is—who knew wind power and sugar oil were the new secret ingredients for saving the planet? 🌍 Would’ve thought they’d stick to bureaucracy as their main export! 😂
