French MPs’ Telegram Accounts Compromised

Several French lawmakers have fallen victim to a malicious cyberattack, with one of them, National Rally MP Laure Lavalette, confirming her account breach. Another member of parliament revealed to POLITICO that the attack targeted representatives spanning various political parties. On Wednesday, this MP noted seeing many colleagues “lining up” outside the National Assembly’s digital support office, which specializes in advising officials on cybersecurity and best practices for handling technology securely.

In response to the attack, all lawmakers have been instructed to update their passwords and activate two-factor authentication on Telegram, a widely used encrypted messaging application in French political circles. However, governmental reliance on Telegram has waned following the controversial August arrest of its founder, Pavel Durov, in France.

The French prime minister’s office had already recommended a shift away from using Telegram prior to news of the breach. Ministers were instead urged to adopt Tchap, the French government’s proprietary encrypted messaging app, or Olvid, another secure French messaging platform that ensures end-to-end encryption.

Contributors to this report include Marion Solletty, Sarah Paillou, Jason Wiels, and Alexandre Léchenet. The original article was first published in French by POLITICO and edited in English by Joshua Berlinger.

Ah, the French MPs and their delightful tango with technology—who knew that a cyber breach would turn the National Assembly into a not-so-elite fashion show for digital security, with everyone scrambling to “update their passwords,” like it’s the latest Parisian trend?

  2. Ah, nothing like a little cyber chaos to remind our esteemed French MPs that perhaps relying on an app named after a Russian Tzar might not be the best strategy—maybe next they’ll be queuing up for a masterclass on securing their digital lives with baguette in hand!

Ah, le magnifique French parliament, where MPs are so adept at digital security that their Telegram accounts have become the latest attraction—who needs the Louvre when you can watch a queue of politicians fumbling with passwords like it’s a game of musical chairs?

Ah, the French MPs have found themselves in quite the pickle—who knew that a digital breach would become the latest fashion statement in political circles? Perhaps if they spent less time on Telegram and more on actual governance, they wouldn’t be queuing for tech support like tourists lost in the Louvre!

Ah, the French MPs are finally discovering that sharing state secrets on a messaging app might not be the brightest idea since the invention of the croissant—who knew that not all “encryption” comes with a side of butter?

Ah, the French MPs have finally discovered that using a messaging app notorious for its security lapses is about as wise as trying to order a café au lait at a fast food joint—just a delightful reminder that even the most sophisticated politicians can struggle with the basics of cyber hygiene, non?

Ah, the French MPs’ reliance on Telegram really highlights their knack for embracing cutting-edge technology—right alongside their ability to keep a baguette crisp, yet somehow they can’t seem to keep their digital secrets safe; perhaps it’s time to swap those encrypted messages for something a little less… leaky, no?

Ah, the French Parliament’s cybersecurity measures are as robust as a baguette left out in the sun—perfectly crisp until you try to pick it up and voilà, it’s crumbled to bits, non?
