Defense Secretary Hegseth Criticizes European Defense Contributions
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth strongly agreed with Senator J.D. Vance’s criticism of European defense spending, calling it “PATHETIC” and condemning what he described as European nations “free-loading.”
In response to these remarks, U.K. Defence Secretary John Healey addressed the issue during an interview with Times Radio, interpreting the comments as a “challenge” rather than an outright insult.
“The Americans have a point,” Healey stated. “When it comes to defense spending, European security, and our support for Ukraine, European nations can and must do more. The U.K. is already leading by example.”
Later, speaking to LBC News, Healey commented on reports that sensitive conversations had taken place on a third-party messaging app, saying it was a matter for the U.S. to address.
“They know they’ve made a mistake and have launched an investigation,” he said. “For all of us working in this field, ensuring the security of our communications is paramount, and in the U.K., we take great care to protect that.”
Healey also stressed that the U.K. is actively working to strengthen European military support for Ukraine, particularly given uncertainty over continued U.S. backing. “We are addressing this challenge from the U.S.,” he affirmed.
He further emphasized the importance of ongoing diplomatic efforts, stating, “Our priority must be a successful conclusion to the peace talks, and we fully support President Trump’s efforts to create this opportunity.”
