PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed François Bayrou as France’s new prime minister, according to an official statement from the Elysée Palace.
Bayrou succeeds Michel Barnier, whose government collapsed last week following a failed attempt to pass a scaled-down social security budget aimed at addressing France’s significant deficit. The political turmoil left Macron in need of new leadership to move forward.
Earlier this week, Macron informed lawmakers during a meeting on Tuesday that he intended to name a new prime minister within 48 hours, and Bayrou’s appointment aligns with that timeline.
Bayrou is expected to assemble his government in the near future.
