The decisions to acknowledge a Palestinian state arise amid increasing international criticism of the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the “suffering and starvation” in Gaza as “unspeakable and indefensible.”
In a Thursday interview, Rubio stated that these decisions signaled to Hamas that the group was receiving rewards for its actions. “If I’m Hamas, I’d basically conclude: ‘Let’s not do a ceasefire, we can be rewarded, we can claim it as a victory,’ ” Rubio remarked.
The U.S. withdrew from the ceasefire discussions on the same day France declared it would recognize Palestinian statehood. Washington’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, mentioned that Hamas was not behaving in good faith.
