Paris – A French government source stated on Wednesday that the European Union and China need to “take global climate leadership” following Donald Trump’s anticipated return to the White House, just ahead of a minister’s visit to Beijing.
Agnès Pannier-Runacher, the French Minister for Ecological Transition, is set to visit China on Thursday and Friday. This marks the first visit by a French Environment Minister to China in five years.
Ms. Pannier-Runacher’s team highlighted that “we are at a pivotal moment” regarding the three key themes of the visit, which are the COP30 in Brazil (November 10-21), the UN Ocean Summit (UNOC) in Nice (June 9-13), and additional negotiation sessions for an international treaty on plastic pollution in Geneva (August 5-14).
France views the upcoming summit between Beijing and the EU in July as “a good opportunity” to publicly showcase joint Sino-European leadership on climate matters. (May 28, 2025)
