Yerevan/Baku – This week, Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon traveled to Armenia and Azerbaijan to promote peace initiatives between the two nations, which recently concluded negotiations and reached agreements on the final aspects of a peace deal. This agreement is anticipated to officially resolve nearly 40 years of conflict.
Fajon kicked off her trip in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, where she met with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The Foreign Ministry indicated that she expressed support for Armenia’s pro-European stance during their discussions. Additionally, she held talks with Alen Simonian, the President of the Armenian Parliament.
On Thursday, she proceeded to Azerbaijan, where she met with her Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov. Fajon was also welcomed by President Ilham Aliyev, Prime Minister Ali Asadov, and Speaker of Parliament Sahiba Gafarova.
In Baku, Fajon endorsed the ongoing efforts to normalize relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and expressed optimism about the confirmed draft peace agreement. “We hope that both parties will sign the agreement promptly, thereby fostering stability, peace, and enhanced opportunities in the South Caucasus region,” she stated.
