Finance Minister Jan Jambon Refutes Claims of Secret Capital Gains Deal

Brussels (Eurotoday) – Belgium’s new finance minister, Jan Jambon, has denied the existence of a separate agreement regarding the introduction of the capital gains tax.

Jan Jambon was responding to comments made by MR chairman Georges-Louis Bouchez, who claimed over the weekend that he had a handwritten agreement with Prime Minister Bart De Wever stating that those holding shares for ten years would be exempt from the capital gains tax.

That’s not correct,

said Minister Jambon.

The only document is the coalition agreement, which everyone can read. The agreement is what is stated in that document.

Jambon acknowledged that many questions remain unanswered.

He did confirm that the capital gains tax will apply to a wide range of financial products, including “in principle also to investment funds.” “The entire restructuring effort will require contributions from everyone. It is a programme worth 23 billion euros,” he stated.

Furthermore, Minister Jambon refrained from making additional comments but indicated that the details would become clearer in the coming months. The reform is expected to gain parliamentary approval this year. By 2029, the capital gains tax is projected to generate €500 million. “It wasn’t our primary objective, but within the broader agreement, we realized it had to be included.”

What role does Georges-Louis Bouchez play in the debate?

Georges-Louis Bouchez posted a message on X, urging the PS and Vlaams Belang to stop their “sketch.” “All matters in the coalition agreement are covered by bills and proposals that include all details and modalities on each subject,” he wrote.

Earlier, MR chairman Georges-Louis Bouchez stated, “The agreement on the added value tax was only reached in the final hours of an intense round of negotiations.” “The staff had to work under very difficult conditions. But this is not a crisis. In a government agreement, you outline objectives, principles, and strategies. The specifics are the responsibility of the Minister of Finance. Once Jambon has finalized his bill, we will review it again,” he added.

So, Jan Jambon claims there’s no secret deal on capital gains—guess we’ll just have to take his word for it, eh? I mean, who needs transparency when you can have a coalition agreement as riveting as a dry biscuit? 😂

  2. Oh, brilliant! A finance minister denying secret deals—what a refreshing change of pace in politics! Next, he’ll tell us the tooth fairy is just a myth. 😏💼

Seems like Jambon’s just channelling his inner magician—now you see a secret deal, now you don’t! 🤦‍♂️ Can’t wait for the next episode of “Who Wrote What?”… maybe it’ll be a bestseller in the Brussels bookshops! 📚✨
