Fico: We must acknowledge the EU, but we should also avoid aligning with its leadership’s incompetence

Brussels/Bratislava – Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico emphasized the importance of not overlooking the European Union while also rejecting the incompetence of its leadership ahead of the extraordinary European Council summit in Brussels on Thursday. He expressed his support for the EU and acknowledged the beneficial effects of Slovakia’s membership on the country’s development, according to TASR.

The President of the European Council, António Costa, called the summit of EU leaders for Thursday evening due to US President Donald Trump‘s threats concerning Greenland, which he seeks to acquire, and the potential tariffs on various European nations.

Fico commented that Costa organized the meeting to quell the anxiety of certain member states, labeling the summit as a “super expensive dinner” where no significant decisions are anticipated. He noted that the conclusion time of the European Council meeting remains uncertain.

In a video recorded on the government’s special aircraft, Fico reiterated his criticism of the EU leadership, mentioning his previous opposition to the nomination of former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas for the EU foreign policy chief role, and his recent calls for her replacement. He also commended MEPs from the Smer-SD party for their vote to dismiss European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“I support the EU and recognize the positive impact of our membership on our development. However, that does not mean I will blindly endorse Brussels, especially in light of the current anti-Slovak and pro-Brussels opposition,” Fico stated, adding, “The Union cannot be led by individuals who key global players do not engage or converse with constructively.” He highlighted US Secretary of State Marco Rubio‘s repeated refusal to meet with Kallas.

Fico asserted that the EU can only recover from its profound crisis through new leadership and innovative ideas. He pointed out three issues undermining the EU: excessive climate goals hindering competitiveness against China and the global South, the failure to manage illegal migration—with Trump’s hardline approach being a potential model—and the lack of courage to express independent views on crucial foreign policy matters.

He criticized the current EU leadership for not providing solutions to these challenges, insisting it must be replaced. “This is not a personal attack; it is political reality,” he stated, comparing the EU’s situation to a massage parlor where merely changing the environment is insufficient without a change in personnel. (22 January)

“The European Union cannot be led by people whom the key global players do not meet and do not argue with in a good way. We can only emerge from the deep crisis in which the EU finds itself with new leadership and new ideas.” Robert Fico

  1. Sounds like Fico’s throwing shade at Brussels while still needing a seat at the table, eh? Classic juggling act – acknowledging the EU’s charm but dodging its leadership like a dodgy taxi driver avoiding potholes. 😏

Fico’s got a real knack for turning a fancy Brussels dinner into a Michelin-starred farce—who knew solving EU crises required a side of sarcasm with the main course? 🍽️ Can’t wait to see if the ‘new ideas’ come with a complimentary bottle of reality!

Seems like Fico’s got it all figured out! Why bother with effective leadership when you can serve up an “expensive dinner” buffet of hot air instead? 🍽️😏

  4. Seems like Fico’s on a crusade against Brussels’ finest, calling the summit a “super expensive dinner” – guess he’s expecting them to serve up some actual solutions alongside the overpriced hors d’oeuvres. 🍽️🥂

Seems like Fico’s got a knack for turning a summit into a fancy buffet where everyone’s just nibbling on the same stale ideas. 🍽️🥴 Can’t wait for the ‘transformative’ leadership to serve up anything more than lukewarm hors d’oeuvres!

Seems like Fico thinks the EU is a bit like a dodgy pub where the landlord is always shaking his head at the regulars—cheers to that! 🍻 Let’s just hope he doesn’t order a round that costs more than our collective sanity.

Interesting how Fico thinks a “super expensive dinner” in Brussels will solve the EU’s problems—maybe the dessert will include some fresh ideas? 🍰🥂

Nothing screams “progress” like a summit that’s just an overpriced buffet for leaders to chat about their latest blunders. 🍽️ But hey, at least Fico knows a good massage parlor when he sees one! 😂

So, Fico thinks the EU’s like a dodgy pub—great for a pint but you wouldn’t want to take the landlord’s advice, eh? 🍻

  10. Incredible how Fico thinks we can swap out the EU leadership like changing shirts—newsflash, mate, it’s not a tailor shop! 😂 Just another day of political theatre, but hey, at least the dinner’s fancy! 🍽️

Seems like Fico’s on a mission to rescue the EU from its own leadership—like trying to salvage a sinking ship by changing the deck chairs. 🍷🛳️ Good luck with that, mate!

Sounds like Fico’s got the recipe for the EU: a pinch of acknowledgement, a dash of disdain, and a whole lot of ‘who’s cooking this mess?’ 🍽️ Just another day at the ‘super expensive dinner’ where the appetizers never quite lead to a main course.

Looks like Fico’s got a handle on the EU’s “leadership”—a bit like a cat trying to herd mice, eh? 🐱‍👤 But hey, at least he’s got a cozy dinner planned in Brussels while the rest of us are stuck in the real world! 🍽️

Seems like Fico thinks the EU is a fancy restaurant where the waiters don’t know how to serve, but he’s still ordering the most expensive dish on the menu. 🍽️ Good luck with that, mate!

Guess it’s nice to see Fico embodying the spirit of a proper European dinner party—lots of talk, fancy words, and no one actually changes their mind. 🍽️💼

Not sure if Fico’s aiming to reshape the EU or just practicing for the next big comedy festival in Bratislava! 😂 With all this chatter about “new leadership,” you’d think he was running a trendy café instead of a country. 🍽️

  17. holycombo Avatar

So, Fico’s off to Brussels for a “super expensive dinner” where the main course is likely just a plate of hot air served with a side of indecision. 🍽️ Bon appétit, eh?

Brilliant! So we’re keeping the EU but ditching the leadership? Sounds like a plan as solid as a paper umbrella in a rainstorm, mate. 😏🍻
