Bratislava – On Monday, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán formalized their collaboration by signing a memorandum focused on cross-border development between Slovakia and Hungary at the government office in Bratislava. Fico emphasized the importance of revitalizing regional cooperation within the Visegrad Group (V4), highlighting that such initiatives have not garnered acceptance from major players in the European Union, according to reports from TASR.
During the official visit, Fico underscored the strong, friendly ties between the two nations, as well as their personal rapport. He asserted that there are no significant political issues currently causing tension between Slovakia and Hungary, and both prime ministers are prepared to meet should any disputes arise.
Orbán remarked, “We are currently experiencing the best Slovak-Hungarian relations in history. I want to assure that Slovakia and Slovaks can always count on us, just as we Hungarians can rely on Slovakia, due to our numerous shared interests.”
Fico highlighted their discussions on nuclear energy, where Slovakia has made considerable advancements, with a significant portion of the nation’s electricity generated by domestic nuclear plants.
“I am pleased to note the collaboration between esteemed Slovak firms and reputable Hungarian companies on projects in this field underway in Hungary,” Fico stated.
He also mentioned that Hungary will take over the presidency of the Visegrad Group starting July 1, and he urged Orbán to prioritize the revitalization of this regional cooperation.
Fico expressed concern that the cooperation within the V4 has been undermined due to resistance from influential EU members. “The existence of regional cooperation within the EU, representing over 60 million people, has been deliberately dismantled, hindering these four countries from advocating for their interests,” he noted, assuring Orbán of his support in this matter.
The Slovak Prime Minister expressed admiration for Hungary’s sovereign stance and Orbán’s efforts to defend Hungarian national interests within the European Union. “As Slovakia’s Prime Minister, I will never condone any punitive actions against EU members exercising their sovereign rights. I will oppose any measures that seek to penalize nations acting in accordance with their commitments to voters and defending their national interests,” Fico declared.
Both leaders concurred on the urgency of ending the war in Ukraine and condemned any military actions that extend the conflict. They expressed their belief that the active involvement of the American administration would yield positive outcomes. Orbán also criticized Ukraine for obstructing gas supplies, viewing this as detrimental to Ukraine’s future prospects in approaching the EU. (April 28)
“The cooperation within the V4 has been deliberately destroyed and liquidated due to the reluctance of major EU players to accept a regional alliance representing over 60 million people, which would allow these four nations to advocate for their interests.” Robert Fico
