Fico: The European Union is the Second Biggest Loser in the Ukraine Conflict

Bratislava – Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) has urged the European Union (EU) to quickly reassess its approach to global affairs, particularly in light of the recent discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He emphasized the need for the EU to assert its sovereignty in policy decisions to ensure its survival, declaring that the EU stands as “the second loser,” alongside Ukraine. This information was reported by TASR.

Fico expressed that the EU lacks a proper understanding of the dynamics between the U.S. and Russia, criticizing its aggressive stance in the Ukraine conflict. He contended that the outcomes in Ukraine will ultimately be shaped by Trump and Putin.

“The EU is largely in the dark regarding U.S.-Russia relations, which are critical for resolving the military conflict. It’s somewhat embarrassing that certain EU member states and institutions are now seeking a seat at the peace negotiations,” Fico stated in a message released by the Government Office of the Slovak Republic.

The Prime Minister argued that those within the EU who have consistently supported military escalation in Ukraine find themselves powerless now. “Despite the EU’s commitment and financial support to Ukraine, it appears that no one is engaging with the EU on these matters,” he added.

Fico also highlighted that after Trump’s call with Putin, he promptly contacted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to inform him about forthcoming developments, which may include significant shifts such as the possibility of democratic elections. “No one consults us in the EU; neither the President of the European Council nor the heads of the European Commission or Parliament are part of these discussions. The EU must quickly awaken from its military frenzy and recognize its need for independent viewpoints to thrive,” he proclaimed.

Fico reiterated that in addition to Ukraine, the EU is also at a disadvantage due to its lack of an independent stance on key foreign policy matters. He argued that throughout the Ukraine conflict, the EU has simply followed the lead of the previous U.S. administration under Biden.

He warned that Trump would demand a return of support given to Ukraine during Biden’s presidency, pushing Europe to increase its energy imports from the U.S. Furthermore, he suggested that Trump might insist NATO allies raise their defense expenditures substantially, threatening that failure to do so could jeopardize NATO’s collective defense guarantee. “President Putin will retain control over parts of Ukraine and will likely secure a commitment that Ukraine will never join NATO. Consequently, Ukraine risks losing a significant portion of its territory and resources, while foreign military forces remain on its soil,” he added.

This phone call between Trump and Putin, which took place on February 12, marked their first official communication since Trump took office, during which they agreed to initiate negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. (February 13)

Oh, brilliant! The EU, sitting at the kids’ table of global politics while Trump and Putin play chess—must be a lovely view from Bratislava! 🙄 Maybe they should consider a nice game of Snakes and Ladders to get back in the game…

Honestly, if the EU were any more out of the loop, they’d need a GPS just to find their own policies. 🇪🇺🗺️ It’s like watching a bunch of clowns trying to juggle while the real circus is happening elsewhere! 🤡

Looks like Fico’s had a bit too much coffee and decided to play geopolitical chess while the EU’s still figuring out checkers. Who knew European diplomacy could be this entertaining? 😂🍵
