Prague – The Czech Republic reaffirms its support for Ukraine and advocates for the adoption of the 18th package of stringent anti-Russian sanctions, Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS) announced today to ČTK. He emphasized that the unity of the European Union is essential, criticizing the Slovak parliament’s decision to prevent its government from endorsing further sanctions against Russia as detrimental to European security.
The Slovak parliament today approved a resolution that binds the members of Prime Minister Robert Fico’s cabinet to abstain from voting for new sanctions and trade restrictions against Russia at the international level. As a EU member state, Slovakia participates in anti-Russian sanctions, which require unanimous approval from all member states for the introduction of new measures or the extension of existing ones.
“I do not view the Slovak parliament’s decision, with all due respect, as beneficial for the security of Europe. The Czech Republic regards the struggle against Russian aggressive policies as significant. Therefore, unity within the EU, particularly in relation to Russian aggression, is crucial. The Czech Republic will persist in supporting Ukraine and advocating for the 18th package of stringent anti-Russian sanctions,” Fiala stated.
He echoed the sentiments of Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský (independent), who believes there is no justification for lifting sanctions. Lipavský argues that Russia’s procrastination in ceasefire negotiations indicates the necessity for continued pressure on Moscow, including the implementation of tougher sanctions.
Deputy Prime Minister Marian Jurečka (KDU-ČSL) remarked that the Slovak National Council’s decision is not only politically perilous but also morally unacceptable. “Rejecting sanctions equates to ignoring the plight of those defending their country and homes from brutal Russian aggression,” he expressed on platform X, referencing the victims of such aggression. Jurečka cautioned that Europe must stand resolutely against aggression; failure to do so would mean betraying not just Ukraine but its own values. (June 5)
